The leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed worry over state institutions becoming appendages of government and called on the GJA to ensure the media holds government and state institutions accountable for their inactions .
The General Secretary of the NDC Mr. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey who led the Party’s leadership to pay a courtesy call on the leadership of the GJA on Thursday, (August 30, 2023) explained that institutions, becoming appendages of government is the result of the economic mess that has plagued the country.

According to him the actions of the Governor of the central Bank and the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) is enough grounds that such institutions have become appendages of government .
Accountability, he said is the only survival of our democracy.
“The Electoral Commission behaves as though it is an appendage of the government. EC simply decides to restrict registration to districts”, the NDC Chief Scribe fumed.

He said these actions are dangerous for our democracy hence the need for it to be nipped in the bud.
Mr. Kwetey therefore called on the media to play well the watchdog role and hold government and state institutions accountable.

The NDC General Secretary who said the courtesy call was to introduce the new NDC leadership to the GJA to discuss issues of national concern later commended the GJA and the media for their contributions to Ghana’s democracy “even though there has been mistakes here and there”.

“We want to see that institutions play their role starting with the media. These are the things that we think are crucial for the survival of our democracy”, he emphasized.
For his part, the GJA President, Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour commended the NDC leadership for the initiative and called for closer collaboration between the media and the party in deepening Ghana’s democratic dispensation.

As this collaboration has started we hope that it will continue so that we can strengthen our democracy become an envious one”, Mr. Dwumfour said.
He however expressed worry over attacks and discrimination by some political parties against the media sending caution that the GJA under his leadership is ready fight for the welfare of the media.

The GJA later assured the leadership of the NDC and political parties of their commitment to ensure the media give them fair and balanced publicity taking into consideration the elections 2024, which the GJA described as crucial.
The delegation of the NDC was made up of the General Secretary Mr. Fifi Fiavo Kwetey, Director of Elections, Lawyer Kakra Asamoah, Deputy Director of Communications Madam Obuobia Darko 1st Deputy National Communications Officer, Mr. Malik Basintale, 2nd Deputy Communications Officer Mr. Ako Gunn.
On the side of the GJA was the President Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the Vice President Madam Linda Asante Adjei, the General Secretary, Mr. Kofi Yeboah, the Organizing Secretary Mr. Dominic Hlordzi and the PRO Rebbecca Ekpe.
