Greater Accra Regional Minister Madam Linda Abenewaa Akweley Ocloo speaking to the media
It would be recalled that, President Mahama, a few weeks ago, toured flood prone areas within the metropolis and directed that all structures on water ways be demolished.
The Regional Minister, in an interview with the media explained that her resolve to begin the demolishing today was in fulfillment of the President’s directive to clear all obstructions on water ways.

She added that very soon the rains would begin and it was therefore important for the Regional Co-coordinating Council to act on time to avert a disaster.
At the Weija-Gbawe and Dansoman ramsar sites, people had put up buildings on the ramsar site which is a protected area and filled greater portion of the ramsar site with chippings in readiness to develop the area.
This got the Member of Parliament (MP) for Shai Osudoku infuriated and called out the Assemblies for the two areas for looking unconcerned to the illegalities taking place within their jurisdiction.

“The Assembly is not helping the situation. For an entire assembly to overlook this is unfortunate but we will enforce the law to the latter”, the Regional Minister emphasized.

Hon. Ocloo who said the Ministry will hold the Assemblies responsible should there be a disaster admonished them, to carry out their mandate without fear or favour as far as stopping or demolishing unauthorized structures on water ways are concerned.
She also directed the Assemblies to stop people from using the ramsar sites as dumping places and clear all the heaped refuse to give way for water during rainfall.

Still at the Weija-Gbawe ramsar site, a Chinese Company, CAITEC which has filled about 6 acres of the ramsar site and was ordered by the President to undo what they’ve done failed to adhere to the directive as only one excavator instead of about 4 excavators are needed to clear the filling of the ramsar site, was spotted on the site.
This, the Minister described as deliberate and gave the assurance that the Coordinating Council would come back with excavators to clear all the filling at the ramsar site.

The Minister, in utter shock to what she was seeing.
In all about 8 structures were demolished within the ramsar sites in Weija-Gbawe and Ablekuma West.
The Minister later gave the assurance that she would always do what is needful to protect life and property.
