The former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso has been awarded the Personality of Great Impact and Excellency award by the Ghana Titans Awards.
The award ceremony which was held at the Accra International Conference Center recently sought to honor some industry leaders in the Ghanaian economy which included the plastic surgeon of thirty-five years and the retired CEO of over five years of stewardship, for his immense contribution and achievements to the development of Ghana.
The Business Executive Media Group alongside other partners of Titans awards group expressed their profound joy in honoring Dr. Oheneba Danso who happened to be a former General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association and the Secretary of the Commonwealth Medical Association for 9-years.
“We are delighted to inform you that following a comprehensive and most credible nomination and assessment, you, Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso have been identified as a Personality of Great Impact and Excellence .” The citation of the award read.
Through his vast implementation of over 30 projects and initiatives at KATH, Dr. Owusu-Danso became an exceptional example of an impactful Ghanaian to the health sector of the country.
To cite an instance, through Dr. Owusu-Danso, KATH became the first Teaching Hospital and the first public hospital to be officially accredited and with a record score of 84 percent by the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA).
Another admirable activity undertaken by Dr. Owusu-Danso during his tenure as KATH boss is the resumption and redevelopment of stalled projects like the reactivation of the maternity and children’s block project alongside other monumental projects like the construction of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the enhanced construction of the Patient Relatives Hostel.
Additionally, the plastic, aesthetic and hand surgeon during his term at KATH ensured the installation of two ultramodern Oxygen plants that cost GH₵5.4 million. This plant installed by the retired CEO of the KATH is the highest installed medical oxygen production capacity in any West African hospital.
In regards to the battling of the global COVID-19 pandemic, with KATH recording the first two confirmed cases in Ghana, Dr. Oheneba Danso supported the laboratory Service Directorate of KATH to set up an accredited testing center at the hospital. KATH became the first hospital to establish a COVID-19 testing center in the country and the third testing center after Noguchi Research Center in Accra and Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research (KCCR) in Kumasi.
Again During his outstanding administration of KATH, Dr. Oheneba Danso also exhibited remarkable leadership qualities which aided the hospital to secure over five million Ghana cedis funding from the Ghana Gas Company towards a new project for expanding the psychiatry facility beds from 9 to 40. Through his leadership, he also facilitated the completion of a 47-unit housing complex for house officers (junior doctors) of the hospital.
Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso ensured that patients’ records and files were well kept by leading the hospital to become fully digitalized on August 1, 2020. Hence, all clinical and financial activities of the hospital became paperless to ensure proper capture, storage and timely retrieval of patients’ records which have contributed greatly in reducing patient waiting time and improved revenue for the hospital.
In regards to improving the overall satisfaction and motivation of his staffs, Dr. Oheneba Danso also ensured the re-introduction of the Annual Best Staff Awards which had been suspended for four years prior to his appointment.
He also facilitated the training of staffs in customer care by experts which was supported by the Fidelity Bank, introduced the free screening for breast, cervical and prostate cancers in addition to the annual healthcare facility for staff.
Under his leadership the hospital adopted various policies and operational protocols which were approved by the Board in 2021.
